5 warning signs for sleep d/o
falling asleep at work/driving snoring obesity/HTN AM headaches depression/insomnia/memory loss
what is the tool to measure sleepiness?
epworth sleepiness scale
max score 24, over 10 is abnormal
describe nacrolepsy
genetic, manifests in teens
involves cataplexy, hypnogogic hallucinations and sleep paralysis
describe idiopathic hypersomnia
excessive sleepiness but does not fit criteria for narcolepsy
elements of sleep hygiene
only sex and sleep in bed
don’t watch TV in bed
don’t watch clock
keep regular hours
what drugs can affect sleep?
caffeine
alcohol
nicotine
rec drugs
why is a good social hx important for pts with suspected sleep d/o?
may reveal h/o abuse, molestation, trauma, assault, PTSD
what is REM behavior d/o?
pt does not become paralyzed during REM sleep and can act out dreams
