Dyssomnias- are sleep disorders that produce difficulty initiating, maintaining and/or timing sleep
For example,. Sleep-onset insomnia refers to a sleep disorder involving persistent difficulty falling asleep at the usual sleep time.
Sleep-onset insomnia can significantly disrupt the sleep-wake cycle and its regulation. Common complaints are sleep onset occurring much later than desired, sleep is non-restorative (quantity or quality) of sleep time is less than desired. This can also cause asynchrony between the sleep-wake cycle and the external environment.

Parasomnias- Parasomnias are sleep disorders characterised by the occurrence of Inappropriate physiological and/or psychological activity during sleep or sleep-to wake transitions

Sleep walking occurs during stages 3&4 NREM sleep; sufferers mostly perform routine activities such as brushing their teeth. Painful injuries sustained during sleep walking are often not perceived until the individual awakens
