Automatic processes/ Controlled processes
Automatic processes are processes that require little or no mental awareness/effort. Automatic process may be completed at the same time. example listening to music whilst having a shower.
Controlled processes-are processes that require a high level of mental processing/awareness . they require focus and concentration and can only be completed one at a time- example driving
Biological Rhythms
Biological Rhythms- are the cyclical natural rhythms our body follows in order to perform a variety of functions.
Circadian Rhythm
Circadian Rhythm- changes to physiological function or bodily activity that occur as a cycle that lasts around 24 hours.
The sleep-wake cycle is an example of a circadian rhythm, with a duration of approx 24 hours
Ultradian Rhythm
Changes in physiological function or bodily activity that arise as part of a cycle which occurs within 24 hours.
The sleep proportion (REM/NREM cycles) are examples of an ultradian rhythm- lasting approx 90 minutes.
