Sleep Disorders Flashcards
name three common daytime symptoms of sleep apnea
hypersomnolence
headache
neuropsychiatric dysfunction
what type of acid base imbalance does sleep apnea cause? what is the mode of breathing associated with this type?
respiratory acidosis…high CO2 and hypoxemia
hypoventilation
what can happen to your blood with sleep apnea?
polycythemia…EPO cranked up cause of low O2
what type of blood pressure change can sleep apnea cause?
pulmonary hypertension
what test can you do for detecting sleep apnea?
polysomnography
what is the number one treatment for sleep apnea?
positive airway pressure via CPAP or BiPAP
what is the difference in CPAP and BiPAP?
CPAP is continuous pressure and BiPAP changes with expiration and inspiration
what two issues is Cheyne stokes respiration associated with?
CNS issues and heart failure
what is Cheyne Stokes respiration? how to diagnose it?
when there is fluctuating CO2 levels in the blood that take a little bit of time to reach the respiratory CNS neurons and it leads to cyclical bouts of high respiration and low respiration …diagnose with a polysomnography chart and seeing the cyclical rounds of tachypnea and hyperpnea
what is apnea?
90% decreased level of respiration lasting longer than 10 seconds
what is hyperpnea?
decreased level of respiration but not enough to be classified as apnea
does obstructive sleep apnea block inspiratory or expiratory flow?
inspiratory
explain what central sleep apnea is
when there is issue with the respiratory center or control center of breathing, and there is no stimulus to the muscles that are in charge of normal breathing
how to differentiate central breathing on polysomnography
during times of apnea, there will not be any changes in the abdominal and other muscle pressures
how to differentiate obstructive sleep apnea on polysomnoography
during times of apnea, everything else will be normal
