bad dreams
NIGHTMARES
a rare disorder in which the brain mechanisms that normally
inhibit the voluntary muscles fail, allowing the person to thrash around and even get up and act out nightmares
REM behavior disorder
a state of panic experienced while sound asleep. People may sit up, scream, run around the room, or flail at some unseen attacker. It is also common for people to feel unable to breathe while in this state.
Night Terrors
usually vividly remembered immediately upon waking

deep non-REM sleep,
occurs in about 20 percent of the population and is at least partially due to heredity
sleepwalking or somnambulism
due to the deeper N3 sleep becoming even deeper during sleep loss, which would make fully waking even more difficult

the inability to get to sleep, stay asleep, or get a good quality of sleep
Insomnia
worrying, trying too hard to sleep, or having anxiety
psychological causes of insomnia
too much caffeine, indigestion, or aches and pain
physiological causes of insomnia
will cause you to feel tired and sleepy the next day if you take depressants and one way to experience the form of insomnia (when a person sleeps but sleeps poorly)
REM rebound
One treatment that seems to have more success than any kind of sleep medication
cognitive-behavior therapy
When the person stops breathing for 10 seconds or more,
breathing stops, there will be a sudden silence, followed shortly by a gasping sound as the person struggles to get air into the lungs.
Sleep Apnea
a device that delivers a continuous stream of air under mild pressure, during sleep
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device
