What is sleep apnoea?
A sleep disorder where breathing is interrupted repeatedly during sleep. Characterised by loud snoring and episodes of stop breathing
What are the types of sleep apnoea?
Obstructive- airway muscles relax causing blockage
Central- brain intermittently stops making the effort to breathe
What causes sleep apnoea?
Birth defects
Infection
Obesity
Gi problems
Brain bleed
CVS issues
Drugs
Poisons
What are the symptoms of sleep apnoea?
Sleep deprived
Nocturia
Insomnia
Headaches
Fatigue
Difficulty conentrating
What is the diagnostic sleep study?
Polysomnogram
What does polysomnogram measure?
Brain movement
O2 and CO2 levels
Vital signs
Snoring /movement
What is the treatment of sleep apnoea?
Avoid depressants
CPAP
Oral mouthpiece
Weight loss
Surgery- mandibular repositioning splint
What is narcolepsy?
Rapid onset of REM sleep
Cataplexy, Excessive daytime somnolence, hallucinations, sleep paralysis
