Sleep and Dreaming Flashcards
high frequency, low amplitude waves means the body is
alert and awake
what are the 5 different types of waves?
- theta
- sleep spindle / k-complex
3/4. delta (high amp, low freq) - beta (REM)
True or False
the process of falling asleep goes from high freq, low amp to low freq, high amp
TRUE
sleep spindle
a burst of high frequency activity
facts about REM sleep
- rapid eye movements
- body paralysis (neck down)
- active brain activity
- dreams
What is REM behavior disorder?
these people will often act out their dreams
what stage does sleep walking happen in?
1 or 2
what are microsleeps
when you check out for 30sec-1min and then come back
benign insomnia and example
harmless and treatable (ex: restless leg syndrome: leg kicks out when they try to fall asleep and wakes them up again)
Sedative / alcohol induced insomnia
tolerance: having to take more of a drug to get the same effect
hypnogogic hallucinations
occur when you first fall asleep in stage 1
night terrors
non REM sleep nightmares (more often with children)
sleep paralysis
occurs in REM sleep from the neck down
sleep walking
tends to happen with children or adults in high stress situations
REM behavior disorder
when people do not experience sleep paralysis and will act out their dreams
narcolepsy
intense periods of sleep that are triggered by high emotions and unavoidable. person goes into REM sleep while they’re still awake, and even experiences paralysis and can collapse in extreme cases. (has genetic basis)
sleep apnea
this person falls asleep and stops breathing allowing them to only sleep for a few minutes at a time. CO2 builds up and wakes them up with a big snort and then they go back to sleep. (cause: obesity or young children)
they all snore really loudly.
what are the 3 theories of dreaming?
- Freudian
- cognitive
- activation-synthesis
Freudian theory of dreaming:
dreams as unconscious with fulfillment and conflicts
cognitive theory:
dreams help brain consolidate memories and cope with emotional situations. dream content is influenced by external events.
activation-synthesis theory:
dreams are the brains attempt to make sense of random brain activity that occurs during sleep (meaningless). limbic system is active causing intense emotions. frontal not active causing acceptance of illogical events.
hypnosis:
an altered state of consciousness marked by relaxation, suggestibility, and lack of reality testing
