Sleep Flashcards
Sleep is controlled by three factors
Homeostatic, Alleostatic and Circadian factors
Functions of sleep
- Recuperation theorie
- Adaption theory
- Information consolidation theory of sleep
- Clean uo theory of sleep
- Sleep and learning
Recuperation theories
- Being awake disrupts homeostasis
- Sleep is needed in order to keep homeostasis stable. Sleeps performs important functiom
Adaption theories
Sleep does not serve specific function, just adaption to inner carcadian rhythmic clock
Information consolidation theory of sleep
Sleep in order to process information aquired during daytime
Clean up theory of sleep
Brain cleans itself of toxins and waste while asleep
Sleep and learning
Sleep aids in consolidation of longterm memory. Hippocampus plays essential role
Structures involved in sleep
Hypothalamus, Brain stem, Thalamus, Pineal gland, Basal forebrain and Amygdala
Physiological mechanism
Reciprocal inhibition (between wake and sleep promotin neurons) Venrolateral preoptic area (VLPO) - Neurons connect directly to arousal promoting centers but rather inhibit activity
Measuring sleep
EEG (Electroencephalography), EMG (Electromyography) or EOG (Electro-oculography)
Biological clock
- Circadian rhythm
- Zeitgebers (light and dark)
- Internal desynchronisation
- Suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN)
- Subjective time
- Dopamine generated neuronal circuit
Sleep disorders
Insomnia, Hypersomnia, Parasomnia, REM-Sleep Dysfunction, Jetlag
