Why do we sleep
Our body needs rest to function properly. Repair damage to brain cells. Rest, rejuvenate and replenish. Also conserve energy for the day
What happens when we sleep
REM: rapid eye movement
NREM: non rapid eye movement
What happens if we do not sleep
Our body cannot function properly and prevents the s to carry out daily actions. Emotionally will effect our attitude and communications
How much sleep do we need
Teenagers should have 8 hours of sleep. Young children/ babies will have 10+ hours. Elder people will have a small amount.
Sleep phenomena
Sleep talking, walking & eating whilst in a state of sleep. Unaware they are doing the action
REM behaviour distorter
Sleeper doesn’t reach muscle atonia (paralysis)
Acts out dreams whilst laying down, thrashing around of their limbs- can cause harm to person or sleep partner
Sleep paralysis
Opposite of REM Behaviour disorder. Waking suddenly out of REM and the muscles do not come out of anatonia (cannot move muscles)
What is sleep
A state of conscious where the individual is unresponsive to external factors
