Dreaming Flashcards
What happens when we dream?
During dreams the sleeper either dreams REM or NREM
REM?
Dreams tend to follow a story line and the dreamer can often feel like they are in another world. They can have dreams with things from real life tying in. Nightmares tend to occur in REM. common actions include running, jumping, flying & falling.
NREM?
Dreams are less frequent (10%) and more difficult to remember than REM dreams. Tend to be brief, less intense and have little story line. Lighter sleepers or with anxiety are more likely to dream in NREM
3 minds
Conscious mind: fully aware
Preconscious mind: easily recall
Unconscious mind: reside all thoughts and feelings (cause guilt or anxiety)
Freud theory
Whilst awake we do not wish to access our unconscious mind, it is associated with negative emotions and is blocked out by our ego. When asleep our ego drops and our unconscious mind is accessed while dreaming
Manifest content
The content of our dreams we remember upon waking, symbols & images that allows us to describe the dreams to people
Latent content
The true meaning of the content of our dreams.
Problem solving theory
Dreams have a purpose and help us solve problems. It states that our dreams do not have a hidden meaning and we don’t have to pay attention to our dreams as they automatically deal with our problems. “Sleep on it” saying comes from.
Activation synthesis theory
Biological approach. Our dreams are a byproduct of the random firing of neutrons in our brain. Due to random activity our dreams become ‘mish-mash’ of experiences we’ve had.
Daydreams
Occur during normal state of consciousness. We give full attention to our thoughts and block out the external world. Can be enjoyable but must be careful not to harm others e.g. Driving whilst daydreaming
Lucid dreaming
Being able to control your dreams. Once aware that you are dreaming, the sleeper than has the ability to change what is happening
What are dreams
A very personal experience that a person has when they are asleep wither REM or NREM. 90% of dreams occur in REM. People cannot always remember the dreams
