Sleep Flashcards
What are the three biological rhythms?
Circadian Rhythms, Ultradian Rhythms, & Infradian Rhythms
Consciousness
Awareness of yourself and your environment
What is circadian rhythms?
Sleep wake cycle + temperature
Occurs approx every 24 hours
What is Ultradian rhythms?
Stages of sleep
Occurs more than once a day
What are Infradian rhythms?
Women’s menstrual cycle
Occurs once a month or once a season
What are some effects due to sleep deprivation?
Decreased immune system, safety & accident issues, hypertension & impaired concentration
What is the hypothalamus’s job?
Sleep control control center in brain.
Monitors change in light or dark environments. Changes levels of hormones
What is melatonin?
Hormone that regulates daily biological rhythms. Linked to step-wake cycle. Increases during night decreases during day
What are the reasons for sleep?
Preservation & Reservation
What Machine measures brain waves?
EEG
What happens during daylight savings regarding accidents?
More accidents in spring and less after and between day light savings
What is paradoxical sleep?
Sleep in which your brain state is closest to bring awake but body is in relaxed state
Physiologically function theory
Neural activity during EWM sleep provides periodic stimulation of the brain
Activation- synthesis theory
Dreams are the mind’s attempt to make sense of random neural finding in the brain while asleep.
Cognitive development theory
Dreams part of maturation process & reflects knowledge. Reflection of normal cognitive development
