Five ; 1-4 (NREM) , 5 (REM)

- NREM
- Light sleep / 5 mins
- Hallucinations like falling

A
- NREM
- 20 mins / Deeper sleep
- Bursts of rapid rhythmic brain activity ( K-complex )

A
- NREM
- Few minutes
- Slow delta waves

Stage 4 Sleep
A
- 30 mins
- Slow delta waves
- Deep sleep / hard to wake
- Bed wetting , Sleep walking , Night terrors
- Will still respond to some stimuli ( like a baby )
- 4 REM gets shorter every sleep cycle

What happens after NREM 4 ?
A
Body goes through stages 2 + 3 before REM.

Stage 5 Sleep
A
Paradoxical Sleep
- REM
- 10 mins / Deep sleep = Difficult to wake up
- Dreams
- Body can’t move except eyes
- Heart rate increases / Rapid breathing + eye movement
- Gets longer over night

Sleep Deprivation
A
Lack of sleep
- Fatigue + Subsequent death
- Impaired concentration
- Emotional irritability
- Depressed immune system
- After 90 hours awake - Begin having perceptual distortion , hallucinations , and delusions.

Why do we sleep?
A
- Protects us - Sleeping in the darkness when predators loomed about kept our ancestors out of harm’s way.
- Recuperates - Restores + Repairs brain tissue.
- Helps memory - Restores + Rebuilds fading memories.
