Sleep Flashcards
Define sleep
cyclical physiological process that alternates between longer periods of wakefulness
What does they hypothalamus do for your sleep?
The hypothalamus controls the rhythm of the sleep wake cycle and coordinates this cycle with other circadian rhythms
What is Prostaglandin (PG) D2?
Prostaglandin (PG) D2 is the most potent endogenous sleep-promoting substance\
What is bruxism
(teeth grinding)
sleep needed per stage of development
neonates=16hr/day [50% REM]
infants=15 hrs/day [30% REM]
toddlers=12/day [30-20% REM]
preschool=12hr/day {20% REM]
School Age=9-10 hr/day [25% REM]
Adolescants= 8-10 hr/day [25% REM]
young adult=6.5-8hr/day [25% REM]
middle adult=7-9 hr/day [25% REM]
older adult=varies due to extenuating circumstances
What is REM?
vivid dreaming
usually begins 90 minutes after sleep begins
typified by autonomic REM movements
Fluctuating HR, RR, increasing BP
loss of skeletal muscle tone
increased gastric secretions
difficult to arouse
average 20 minutes, increases with each complete sleep cycle
What are the four phases of sleep?
- lightest stage sleep, lasts only a few minutes, decreased physiological activity [HR, BP, T, RR, BMR] easily aroused
- stage of sleep=relaxation arousal still easy brain and muscle activity slows
- slow wave sleep deepest sleep stage hard to arouse, little movement brain and muscle activity very low V/S slower than wake hours growth hormone released in this stage. repairs specialized cells
- REM
