sleep Flashcards
circadian rhythm
involves changes in bodily functions/activities that occurs as part of a cycle with a duration of about 24 hours (sleep cycle)
ultradian rhythm
involves changes in bodily functions/ activities that occurs as part of a cycle with a duration shorter than 24 hours (heartbeat, alert, hunger)
reversibility
sleeper can always be awaken with a strong enough stimuli ( noises) and reverse quickly to the waking state
biological rhythm
cycles changes in bodily functions that repeat themselves through time in the same order
sleep wake cycle
- our bodies are turned into a 24 hour sleep wake cycle which is a regular circadian rhythm
- determined by an internal body clock which is located in the hypothalamus
- light is the main environmental cue
- less light = more melatonin = feeling drowsy
- more light = more alert
sleep disturbances
any sleep related disruptions to sleep - wake cycle, including problems with sleep onset, waking from sleep and abnormal behaviour during sleep
sleep disorder
regular sleep disturbances to sleep and causes distress in normal daily functioning
primary sleep disorder
main cause of the sleep problem (medical condition, use of drugs)
secondary sleep disorder
by-product of another issue, condition, mental disorder (due to back pain, depression, stress, anxiety)
sleep deprivation
inadequate quantity/ quality of sleep - can be voluntary or involuntary
quantity of sleep
amount of sleep
quality of sleep
how we have slept
partial sleep deprivation
have less sleep than is normally needed
