What is narcolepsy?

Dysfunction of the processes that regulate sleep and wake states

What are symptoms of narcolepsy?
A
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Person experiences overwhelming wave of sleep and falls asleep
- Cataplexy - type 1 narcolepsy

Stage 1 - N1
A
Lightest level of sleep, lasts a few min. If awakened, people will feel like they were daydreaming

Stage 2 - N1
A
Relaxation progresses, person is still easily aroused, brain and muscle activity slow

Stage 3 - N3
A
Slow-wave sleep, deepest stage, sleeper is difficult to arouse, vital signs are lower

REM sleep
A
Vivid, full color dreaming, usually last 90 minutes and gets longer each cycle, rapid eye movement, very difficult to arouse sleeper
