Acute pain
Transient, protective, rapid onset, varies in intensity
How long does acute pain last?
Up to 6 months but once underlying cause is resolved the pain disappears
Chronic pain
Persistent, not protective and serves no puprose
How long does chronic pain last?
Last longer than 6 months and interferes with normal functioning
Chronic episodic pain
Pain that occurs sporadically over an extended period of time
Idiopathic pain
Chronic pain that has no identifiable cause - extremely difficult to treat
Nociceptive pain
Pain that arises from damage or inflammation of tissue other than peripheral and central nervous system
Somatic pain
Comes from bones, joints, muscles, skin
Visceral pain
Arises from visceral organs
Neuropathic pain
Abnormal processing of sensory input by the peripheral and central nervous system
