electroencephalogram
EEG; instrument that measure heart rate, breathing, and other data while one is sleeping
alpha activity

deep relaxation; mostly theta waves with sleep spindles and K-complex (one peak of large amplitude)

slow-wave sleep; very slow respiration and heart rate; very hard to awaken someone from this stage

difficulty in going to sleep or staying asleep; may cause anxiety which leads to a feedback loop; can be helped with cognitive behavioral therapy
sleep apnea
breathing stops during sleep which triggers arousal which leads to poor sleep
CPAP
continuous positive airway pressure; treatment for sleep apnea that keeps lungs open
