Skull And Mandible Flashcards
Frontal bone
Makes up your forehead and the upper part of your orbit(eye socket)
Parietal bones
These bones make up the top and sides of your skull. Parietal:wall of cavity(L.)
Occipital bone
Makes up the back and base of your skull. Occipital:back part of head (L.)
Temporal bone
On the side of your head in the location of your ears. Temporal:related to the temples (L.)
Zygomatic bone
Makes up your cheekbone and part of the orbit. Zygomatic: cheekbone (Gr.)
Sphenoid bone
Only part of this bone can be seen wedged between the temporal bone and the zygomatic bone. Sphenoid: wedge-shaped (Gr.)
Maxilla
Makes up the front of your face below your eyes. It also holds your upper teeth. Maxilla: upper jawbone (L.)
Nasal bones
These small bones make up the bridge of the nose (where glasses rest). Nasal: nose (L.)
Lacrimal bones
These bones are in the orbit. These are delicate bones that may be broken or missing in a real skull
Sutures
Non-moveable joints that connect bones of the skull in the adult. Suture:seam (L.)
Coronal suture
Joins the frontal bone to the 2 parietal bones. Coronal:crown (Gr.)
Sagittarius suture
Joins the 2 parietal bones together . Sagittal: running in an anterior/posterior direction (L.)
Lambdoid suture
Joins the parietal bones to the occipital bone. Lambdoid: looks like the Greek letter lambda
Squamous suture
Joins the temporal bone to the occipital, parietal, and sphenoid bones. The bones involved have flat, scale-like edges that overlap to form the suture. Squamous: scale-like (L.)
Mental protuberance
The tip of your chin. Mental means chin (L.)
