Bone Classifciation Flashcards
Long bones
Longer than wide, have a diaphysis of compact bone, 2 epipthyses (compact bones surface with spongy bone inside), and a marrow cavity in the diaphysis, e.g. humerus, femur
Short bones
Boxlike in appearance, external surface of compact bone with spongy bone in the center of the bones, e.g. carpals, tarsals
Flat bones
Roughly parallel surfaces of compact bone with spongy bone in the center of the bone e.g. ribs, sternum, frontal bone of skull
Irregular bones
Complex shapes with flat, notched or ridged surfaces. External surface= compact bone, inside= spongy bone, e.g. vertebrae, internal bones of skull
Sesamoid bones
Usually small, round bones that develop inside of tendons. External surface= compact bone, inside= longs bone. Sesamoid: resembling a sesame seed in size or shape (L.) , e.g. patella
