Cranial Bones
8 total: frontal, parietal (paired), sphenoid, temporal (paired), Occipital, and ethmoid.
Facial Bones
14 total: Mandible, maxilla (paired), zygomatic (paired), nasal (paired), lacrimals (paired), palatines (paired), Inferior nasal conchae (paired), and the vormer
Auditory Ossicles
Malleus, Incus, and Stapes
Foramen Magnum
largest cranial foramina, in the occipital bone, allows the passage of the spinal cord, and vertebral arteries
Internal Auditory Meatus
in the temporal lobe, connects to inner ear, allows the passage of facial and vestibulocochlear (auditory) nerves.
Optic canal
In the sphenoid bone, allows passage of optic nerve and ophthalmic artery.
Temporomandibular Joint
Synovial hinge joint, articulation of mandible to temporal bone, separated by articular disc. Bilateral joint that functions as one unit
Hyoid
Only bone in the body that does not articulate with another bone. Allows language, swallowing, and chewing. Has a body, greater horns, and lesser horns
Suprahyoid muscles
four pairs of muscles above the hyoid. Elevate the hyoid and lower the mandible
