Bone Biology and Ethics Flashcards
Musculoskeletal system functions
support the body, facilitate movement, protect internal organs, store minerals and fat, hematopoiesis (production of blood cells)
Fibrous Joints
tightly connected by connective tissue, generally immovable (Skull sutures)
Cartilaginous Joints
connected by cartilage, limited movement (pubic symphysis)
Synovial Joints
Connective tissue and synovial cavity, very mobile (several types: ball and socket, hinge)
Ligaments
connect bone to bone, strengthens joint but limits movement
Flexion
Bending movement that decreases the angle between body parts
Extension
Straightening movement that increases the angle between body parts
Abduction
Movement of a body part away from the sagittal plane
Adduction
Movement of a body part toward the sagittal plane
Circumduction
Combination of abduction, adduction, flexion, and extension. Appendage moves in a cone shaped path
Rotation
Motion that occurs as one body part turns on an axis
Opposition
Motion in which body parts are brought together
Osteogenic cells
develop into osteoblasts
Osteoblasts
form bone
Osteocytes
Maintain mineral concentration of bone matrix
