Skull and Cranial Cavity Flashcards
Vertebral artery arises from
Subclavian a.
Vertebral a. enters
Basilar a.
poterior cerebral a.
Note: Supplies deep neck and brain via circle of willis
Internal carotid a. arises
Common carotid a.
Internal carotid a. enters
Middle cerebral a.
Anterior cerebral a.
Note: With basilar artery forms major input into circle of willis
Middle meningeal a. arises from
Maxillary a
Middle meningeal a. enters
Arteries of dura mater
Note: Vulnerable to bleed from fracture of pterion
Transverse sinus arises from
Confluence of sinuses
Transverse sinus enters
Sigmoid sinus
Sigmoid sinus arises from
Transverse sinus
Internal vertebral venus plexus
Cavernous sinus
Sigmoid sinus enters
IJ vein
Internal vertebral venous plexus
Cavernous sinus arises from
Veins of the deep face(pterygoid venous plexus)
Veins of the orbit
Veins of the brain
Cavernous sinus enters
Pterygoid venous plexus
Sigmoid sinus
Note: Vulnerable to infection due to venous connection to external face via ophthalmic veins and pterygoid venous plexus
Dura mater
Outer tough layer of connective tissue covering CNS. In skull is directly deep to skull bones. Dura mater is innervated by branches of the trigeminal nerve CN V.
Arachnoid mater
Middle thin layer of connective tissue covering CNS. Adhered to dura mater and connected to pia mater by numerous small extensions called trabeculae
Subarachnoid space
Space between arachnoid and pia containing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
