Cranial Nerves Flashcards
CN I
Olfactory
Note: Consists of multiple small fibers off the olfactory bulb-the bulb sits in the cribriform plate.
CN I Motor/sensory/both
Special Sensory (smell)
CN I source
Frontal Lobe
CN I Skull foramen/destination
Foremina in cribiform plate
CN I innervates
Superior epithelium of nasal cavity for smell
CN II
Optic Nerve
Note: Left and right optic nerves unite at the optic chiasm on the inferior aspect of the brain, then continue into the brain as the optic tracts.
CN II Motor/Sensory/both
Special sensory (vision)
CN II Source
Diencephalon
CN II skull foramen/ destination
Optic canal
CN II Innervates
Retina of eyeball for vision
CN III
Oculomotor
Note:A parasympathetic ganglion-the ciliary ganglion-is associated with this nerve.
CN III Motor/sensory/both
Motor-somatic and parasympathetic
CN III Source
Midbrain
CN III Skull foramen/destination
Superior orbital fissure
CN III Innervates
Somatic muscles in orbit, parasympathetic innervation to muscles of iris and ciliary muscles controlling lens shape
CN IV
Trochlear nerve
Notes: Small-wraps around back of midbrain and enters into dura.
CN IV M/S/B
Motor-Somatic
CN IV source
Midbrain
CN IV skull foramen/destination
Superior Orbital fissure
CN IV innervates
Motor to superior oblique muscle in orbit
CN V1
trigeminal nerve-ophthalmic division
Note: All branches of CN V also provide sensory innervation to dura mater.
CN V1 M/S/B
Sensory-somatic
CN V1 source
Pons
CN V1 skull foramen
Superior orbital fissure
CN V1 innervation
Sensation of the orbit, superior nasal cavity, forehead
CN V2
Trigeminal nerve- maxillary division
Passes deeply through maxilla to emerge from infraorbital foramen. Parasympathetics are from connections to CN VII. All branches of CN V also provide sensory innervation to dura mater.
CN V2 M/S/B
Sensory-somatic
CN V2 Source
Pons
