Orbit/Ear Flashcards
Eye blood supply
Ophthalmic a.
Eye innervation
CN II-Sight
CN III- parasympathetic
CN V1- gen sensory
Cornea function
Protects eye, clear membrane for passage of light, refracts light
Sclera function
Protects eye
Anterior chamber function
Contains aqueous humor-light passes through chamber through pupil
Iris function
Contractile aperture controlling amount of light into eye
Lens function
Assists in refraction for visual focus
Posteriod chamber function
Contains vitreous humor to structurally support retina while transmitting light
Retina function
Detects light
Lacrimal gland blood supply
Supra orbital a.( branch to lacrimal)
Lacrimal gland innervation
Lacrimal nerve from CN V1(gen sensory)
CN VII(parasympathetic)
Nasolacrimal duct function
Drains tears from orbit into nasal cavity
Note: Connects to inferior meatus
Malleus function
Transmits vibrations to inner ear to be detected as sound
Note: First ossicle in chain-contacts tympanic membrane. Chorda tympani branch of CN VII to lingual nerve passes between malleus and incus over tensor tympani muscle
Incus function
Transmits vibrations to inner ear to be detected as sound
Note :Second ossicle in chain
Stapes function
Transmits vibrations to inner ear to be detected as sound
Note: Third ossicle in chain-contacts oval window of inner ear
Tympanic membrane function
Vibrates to transmit soundwaves to ear ossicles
Tympanic membrane blood supply
Maxillary a.
Tympanic membrane innervation
CN VIII
Note:eardrum
Semilunar canals function
Detects 3D acceleration of body to maintain balance and spatial awareness
Semilunar canals innervation
Vestibular portion of CN VIII
Cochlea function
detects sound
Cochlea innervation
Cochlear portion of CN VIII
Auditory tube (Eustachian or Pharyngotympanic tube) function
Passage between nasopharynx and middle ear to maintain atmospheric pressure in middle ear
Note:
Auditory tube (Eustachian or Pharyngotympanic tube) blood supply
Maxillary a.
