Skull anatomy Flashcards
How many cranial bones are there? Name them.
8, parietla, temporal, occipital, frontal, sphenoid, ethmoid
How many facial bones are there? Name them
14, Mandible, maxillary(2), lacrimal(2), zygomatic(2), nasal(2), Palatine(2), Vomer, inferior nasal conchae(2)
Name the cranial sutures.
Coronal, sagittal, parietal, temporal
What are the 2 portions of the frontal bone? What do they form?
Squamous - forms forehead
Orbital- forms superior part of orbit
What other bones does the frontal bone articulate with?
Parietal, sphenoid, ethmoid, and lacrimal
What is the parietal eminence?
Widest part of skull
What other bones does the parietal bone articulate with?
Every cranial bone except ethmoid
Name the parts of the occipital bone.
squama, External occipital protuberence(inion), occipital condyle, basilar portion,
What is the clivus?
Support structure for pons
What passes through the foramen magnum?
Medulla oblongata, spinal cord
What other bones does the occipital bone articulate with?
Parietal, sphenoid, temporal
What are the parts of the ethmoid bone?
Horizontal plate, olfactory foramina, crisia galli
Which bone contains the ethmoidal notch where the ethmoid fits into?
Frontal bone
What is the crista galli?
Point of attachment for folx cerebri
Where are the ethmoidal sinuses located?
Labrynths
What bones does the ethmoid articulate with?
Frontal and sphenoid
Name the parts of the sphenoid bone.
Greater wing, lesser wing, body
What sits within the sella turcica?
Pituitary gland
Name the parts of the sella turcica.
Dorsum sellae, Tuberculum sellae, anterior+posterior clinoid processes
Which part of the sphenoid bone contain the foramen rotundum, ovale, and spinosum?
Greater wing
Which bones does the sphenoid bone articulate with?
Every cranial bone
Where is the temporal bone located?
Side of base of skull
What are the parts of the temporal bone?
squamous, mastoid, tympanic, styloid, zygomatic
What is the thickest and densest bony structure of the cranium? Where is it located?
Petrous portion, contains all organs of hearing and balance
EAM
External auditory meatus

inter pupitary line
GML
Glabellomeatal line
OML
orbital meatal line
IOML
Infra orbital meatal line

How many degrees difference is there between the OML and IOML?
7 degrees
Explain the difference between the Mesocephalic, brachycephalic, and dolichocephalic skulls. What are the degrees difference between the petrous ridges and MSP for each?
Mesocephalic= average skull shape, petrous ridges 47 degress to msp
Brachycephalic= broader side to side, shorter front to back, more shallow on inside, 54 degree angle between petrous ridges and msp
dolichocephalic= 40 degree angle between petrous ridges and msp, increased anterior and posterior diameter
Outer canthus
outer edge of eye
Infraorbital margin
bottom of orbit
Inner canthus
inside of eye
Nasion
Nasal bone articulates with frontal bone
Glabella
Flat part between eye brows
Acanthion
Tip of anterior nasal spine
Gonion
Angle of mandible
Mental point
Anterior portion of mandible
