Skull Flashcards
Name the bones that comprise the orbit
Sphenoid
Frontal
Zygomatic
Lacrimal
Orbital process of palantine
Maxillae
Ethmoid
What is the glabella
Most prominent part of frontal bone
What is the pterion
Area at which the frontal, parietal, temporal and sphenoid meet
What artery is susceptible to rupture from a blow to the side of the head
Hint:
Also has a palpable pulse
Anterior branch of middle meningeal artery
Where is the asterion
Meeting of temporal, parietal and occipital bone
What are buttresses ?
Strong parts of skull unlikely to fracture
Briefly describe Le Fort 1 fractures
Transverse fracture of maxilla above upper lip (moustache fracture)
Explain Le Fort 2 fractures
Transverse upper nasal And frontal bone fracture,
Vertical bi lateral maxillary fractures lateral to nose under orbit
Le Fort 3 fractures
Transverse fracture from upper zygomatic bone lateral to orbit through to the same bone on the contra lateral side
(Passes through upper orbit)
May also be crush or vertical fractures of zygomatic arch
What is the dental formula
2,1,2,3
Define septoplasty
Any repair of the septum
Define rhinoplasty
Fixing of broken nasal bones for aesthetic purposes
What is the purpose of the nasal conchas
Protection from bacteria (muscosal lining)
Increase surface area
Define synostosis
The joining of sutures
What is the cause of a “Conehead baby”
Membranes on the skull allow sliding over the top of each other in babies as they are not yet fused
