Name the functions of the skin (SHAPESV)

1. Sensation: nerve endings react to pain, pressure and temperature

  1. Heat regulation: body temp. Produced by muscle contraction and digestive organs etc. (blood capillaries moving closer or further away from the skin when hot or cold)
  2. Absorption: the skin absorbs creams and oils through the pores and follicles
  3. Protection: the skin protects organs from infections and injury
  4. Excretion: sweating. 99% water and 1% Uric acid
  5. Secretion: sebum (oil) production to lubricate the skin
  6. Vitamin D

Name the 4 different skin types

A
  1. Greasy skin: open pores, comedowns, pustules and papules and thick to the touch.
  2. Normal skin: not too oily or dry. High degree of elasticity
  3. Dry skin: tight and often flaky. Milia and dilated capillaries can often be seen
  4. Combination skin: mixture of any of the ski types. Usually dry cheeks and oily T zone.

Name the 3 skin conditions

  1. Sensitive: reacts easily to products and thin epidermis
  2. Dehydrated: lacking in moisture, prone to fine superficial lines
  3. Mature: poor elasticity can be from ageing, lack of care or sun damage

Ethnicity of skins. Name the 5 different types

A
  1. White skins (white/pink tones): thin epidermis. Prone to early ageing. Do not tan easily and at rush of sun damage.
  2. Chinese skins (light yellow tones): doesn’t prematurely age. Fairly oily, comedones and open pores in t-zone
  3. Asian skins (Indian etc-yellow tones): high melanin content, slow ageing, prone to en even colouring
  4. Mediterranean (olive tones): slow ageing, body hair thicker and coarser
  5. Black: high melanin. Stronger skin so slower ageing. Generally not oily. Prone to keloid scarring.

  2. Impetigo: yellow crusted skin around the nose and mouth.
  3. Cold sores (herpes simplex)

  7. Ringworm (tinea corpis)
  8. Ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis)
