Cells & Tissue Flashcards
1
Q
AUREM. Name the characteristics of all cells:
A
- Absorbs: nutrients for growth and repair
- Uses: O2 and nutrients for heat and energy
- Mitosis: cell division
- Responds: to light and temperature changes
- Excretes: waste products
- Movement: within the cell
2
Q
Structure of the dermis: BIG LOU NEVER SNORES SILENTLY AT HOME:
A
- Big: Blood
- Lou: Lymph
- Never: Nerves
- Snores: Sebaceous
- Silently: Sudoriferous
- At: Arector pili muscle
- Home: Hair and follicle
3
Q
Cell structure:
A
Protoplasm: colourless, jelly-like substance within the cell membrane which is semi-permeable allowing substances to enter and leave the cell
Mitochondria: provide energy
Chromosomes: thread like structures in the nucleus which contain the genes (DNA)
4
Q
4 fundamental tissues of the body
A
- Epithelium: very close packed together cells:
- SQUAMOUS
- CUBOIDAL
-COLUMNAR
- STRATIFIED - Connective tissue:
-AREOLAR
-ADIPOSE
-WHITE FIBROUS
-YELLOW ELASTIC
-CARTILAGE - Muscle tissue
- Nervous tissue
5
Q
Layers of the Epidermis (Corny Lucy’s Gran Spins Germs) going from the surface to the base of the epidermis:
A
- Corneum/horny (most superficial. The cells are flat and are constantly being shed- known as DESQUAMATION
- Lucidum/ clear
- Granulosum/ granular
- Spinosum/ prickle cell
- Basale/ germinating
6
Q
7 Layers of the dermis:
A
- Blood capillaries
- Lymphatic capillaries
- Sensory nerve endings: they send messages to the brain via the nervous system
- Sebaceous glands: secrete sebum. Plenty on the face and scalp, absent from the palms and soles
- Sudoriferous glands (sweat glands)
- Erector pilli muscle: controls the movement and direction of the hair I.e. it makes the hair stand up when cold
- Hair follicles: the hair and sebum is secreted into them
