Skin Glands Flashcards
What are all the Skin Glands?
Sebaceous, Sudoriferous, Mammary and Ceruminours.
What do Sebaceous glands secrete?
Oils.
What do Ceruminous glands secrete?
Modified sweat sweat glands in the External ear that secret earwax.
With a Few exeptions where are the Oil glands connected?
They are connected to the Hair Follicles.
Where is the Secreting portion of the Oil gland located?
Located in the in the Dermis of the skin and opens into the neck of the Hair follicle.
Where would the Oil / Sebaceous glands open directly onto the skin?
Lips, Glands penis, Labia minora, And tarsal glands of the Eyelids.
Where are the Sebaceous / oil glands absent?
They do not occur on the Plams and soles.
They are also small in places on the body and limbs but bigger on the face neck and chest.
What is the Substance that Sebaceous glands secrete?
The product is called Sebum, an oily substance made from Triglycerides, cholesterol, proteins, and inorganic-salts.
What does Sebum provide for the body?
It oats the hair and helps them from becoming brittle and dry.
Also prevents water evaporation from the skin and helps with the growth of some bacteria.
What is Sebum created from?
This product is made from Triglycerides, Cholesterol, proteins and inorganic-salts.
What are the 2 types of Sudoriferous glands /Sweat?
The 2 main types are called:
Eccrine and Apocrine.
What does the Sweat from the “Eccrine” glands contain?
Mostly water with small amounts of Ions.
What is the Main function of the Eccrine Sweat glands?
To Regulate Temp through evaporation.
As sweat evaporates large amounts of heat leaves the bodies surface.
What is the action of “Thermoregulation”?
This is the Homeostatic regulation of the body temp.
What occurs for the Hemostatic sweating AKA “Thermoregulation”.
The act of sweating for this purpose is known as “Thermoregulatory Sweating”.
