What is Actinic Keratosis?
Rough area from sun exposure, sometimes with a layered scale or scab that sometimes falls off. Can be precancerous.
What are the 4 Skin Types?
Dry
Combo
Oily
Sensitive
What is “Adult Acne”?
Acne breakouts from hormonal changes or other factors.
What is “Asphyxiated”?
Skin that is lacking oxygen (asphyxiated - cant breath). Clogged pores and wrinkles; dull and lifeless looking. Can be yellowish or gray in color.
What are Comedones?
Open Comedones: blackheads and clogged pores caused by buildup of debris, oil and dead skin cells in the follicles.
Closed Comedones: are not open to the air; they are trapped by dead skin cells and need to be exfoliated and extracted.
What are Cysts?
Fluid and infection under the skin.
What is Couperose skin? (Also known as Telangiectasia)
Redness; distended capillaries from weakening of capillary walls; internal or external causes.
What is Dehydration?
Lack of water. Also caused by environment, medications, topicals, aging and/or dehydrating drinks like caffeine and alcohol.
What causes enlarged pores?
Excess oil and debris trapped in the follicles. Also caused by loss of elasticity loss or trauma.
What is Erythema?
Redness caused by inflammation.
What is Hyper-kera-tiniz-ation?
An excessive buildup of dead skin cells/keratinized cells. (Keratin is protein).
What is HYPER-pig-mentation?
Brown or dark skin; skin discoloration due to sun exposure or other factors like chemicals that cause the skins melanin to rush up and protect the skin.
What is HYPO-pig-mentation?
White, colorless areas from lack of melanin production.
What is Irritated skin?
Usually redness or inflammation; from a variety of causes. (Sun, chemicals, rough towels, acne, rosacea or anything that irritates the skin).
What is Keratosis?
A buildup of cells; rough texture.
What is Milia?
Hardened, pearl-like masses of oil and dead skin cells trapped under the surface of the skin. Milia is not exposed to oxygen and have to be lanced to be removed.
What are Papules?
Raised lesions; also called blemishes. (Pimples).
What does “poor elasticity” mean?
Sagging; loose skin from damage, sun and aging.
What are “Pustules”?
An infected papule (pimple) with fluid inside.
What is Rosacea?
A vascular disorder; chronic redness. Pimples may be present.
What is Sebaceous Hyperplasia?
Lesions seen in oilier areas of the face. Described as looking like donut holes and can NOT be extracted.
What is Seborrhea?
Oiliness of the skin.
What does “Sensitivities” mean?
Reactions from internal or external causes. More likely to have a reaction than other peoples skin.
What are Solar Comedones?
Large blackheads, usually around the eyes, due to sun exposure.
What is Sun Damage?
UV damage to the epidermis and dermis; primary effects are wrinkles, collagen and elastin breakdown, pigmentation and cancer.
What are Wrinkles/Aging?
Lines and damage from internal or external causes.
