Three types of precursor legions for melanoma:
A
- Congenital nevi- present at birth
- Dysplastic nevi- become dysplastic after puberty
- lentigo maligna- looks like a freckle grows slowly and becomes mottled. Seen on side of face that has more sun exposure.

Melanoma:
A
Arise from melanocytes in deepest epidermal layer
• develop where there is pigment or pre existing nevi.

Radial growth phase
A
Grows parallel to the skin and can be excised.

Vertical growth phase:
A
Atypical melanocytes rapidly penetrate into the dermis and subcutaneous tissue.

Superficial spreading melanoma:
A
Flat scaly about 2cm
Arise from pre existing nevi changes to red white or blue.
