Skin and Tissues (Ch. 8-10) Flashcards
Simple Cuboidal (epithelial cells)
single layer of cube-shaped cells
Simple Columnar (epithelial cells)
single layer of column-shaped cells
Simple Squamous (epithelial cells)
single layer of flat, scale-like cells
Stratified Squamous (epithelial cells)
multiple layers of flat cells at the surface
Pseudostratified Columnar (epithelial cells)
single layer of cells; some are tall and thin and reach the free surface, and others do not.
Cilia are found one which type of cells lining the respiratory tract?
simple columnar
What cells are only found in cartilage?
chondrocytes
Where are mast cells found? What do they do?
Found in connective tissue. Release histamine.
Where is transitional epithelium found? What does it do?
Found in the urinary bladder (and other places). Allows for stretch.
Function of areolar tissue
- Forms tendons and ligaments
- Resists pulling in multiple directions
Define tissue
A group of similar cells that perform a common function.
4 types of body tissues
1) Epithelial
2) Connective
3) Muscle
4) Nervous
What is the ECM made of?
proteins, proteoglycans, and water
4 types of body membranes
Cutaneous, serous, mucous, and connective.
Cutaneous, serous, and mucous are types of epithelial membranes.
5 layers of the epidermis
1) stratum corneum
2) stratum lucidum
3) stratum granulosum
4) stratum spinosum
5) stratum basale
