Skin Flashcards
What are the 4 layers of the epidermis?
stratum basale, stratum spinous, stratum granulosum, stratum corneum
What cells mainly make up the epidermis?
keratinocytes
What happens to keratinocytes as it moves up the layers?
form basal layer, proliferate and move up, differentiate, drop off at corneum
What other cells make up the epidermis?
melanocytes - sit on basement membrane
langerhan - antigen presenting
merkel - sit on basement membrane
What are the names of the different keratinocytes
basal cell, prickle cell, granular cell, keratin
What do keratinocytes do?
form a seal
What granules do granular cells contain?
keratin
What do melanocytes do?
produce melanin, protects keratinocytes DNA from UV damage by melanosomes
What is a characteristic of melanocytes?
dendritic
What is the process for melanin production?
UV light stimulates keratinocytes to product melanocyte simulation hormone which then proceed melanin
Where is the basement membrane in skin?
between epidermis and dermis
What is the dermis?
supportive connective tissue matrix that varies in thickness
What is the function of the dermis?
maintain core temp by:
- regulating skin blood flow
- sweating
- shivering
What is the function of skin?
waterproofing, thermoregulation, sensory, protection and cosmetic
