What is the function of hair?
protection, sensation, thermoregulation and communication
What is the main protein in hair/nails?
keratin
Where is keratin produced?
follicle/nail matrix
What makes up a pile sebaceous unit?
hair follicle, hair shaft, erector pilli muscle and sebaceous gland
What is the purpose of the sebaceous gland?
lubricate hair and prevent infection
Name each hair type and say where they occur
lanugo - foetus and anorexics
vellus - un-pigmented on body
terminal - scalp, beard, pubic
Summarise the hair cycle
Anagan - hair grows (scalp= 2-6yrs, brows=months)
Catagen - resting so stops growing
Telogen - shedding
Describe how synchronicity relate to hair grows
when born hair grows in sync, stops after a while
How does the tester one paradox affect hair growth?
hairs become thick and more pigmented
puberty
due to androgens
