Symptoms of irritant contact dermatitis
Non immune response - chemicals directly damage the skin eg hand washing
How to manage irritant dermatitis
Remove the irritant = cure
Prevent contact
Barrier
Emoillents / steroids
Symptoms of allergic contact dermatitis
Inflammatory response - takes 24-48h to occur eg allergies to nickel / rubber
Intense redness weeping
Also ID allergen and remove and use emollients and topical corticosteroids
When to refer for dermatitis
Undiagnosed atopic eczema Yellow Severe No ID cause 2+ weeks Treatment failure
Symptoms of eczema
Red Sore Itchy Thickened skin Dry
Atopic eczema
Children under the age of 2 diagnosed
Affects QoL
Flare ups caused by environmental factors
Rash will appears
Treatment
Lotions creams ointment
Apply very regularly
Corticosteroids control flare ups
Either hydrocortisone (10) or clobetasone (12)
15g tube, not on the face or on broken skin, no more than twice a day for 7 days
Tinea infections
Ring worm transmission via direct contact with infected people
Red scaly borders
Treatment either
Imidazole - 4 weeks - 2/3 times a day - 10-14 days after
Terbinafine - (6) 1-2 weeks once a day 1/2 weeks after
Refer if persistent or severe
Immunocompromised
Failure to cream / requires POM
Managing mild acne
Benzoyl peroxide - apply 1-2 times a day - comes as gels oils lotions etc chose appropriate for patient
Acne can cover arms back neck face chest
Refer if widespread, young, scarring, distressed or benzoyl peroxide is failing
