skin Flashcards
what is the skin?
what’s its purpose?
largest organ in the body
barrier against infection
prevents water loss
what are the three 3 layers of skin?
epidermis: contains keratinocytes (squamous epithelial cells)
dermis: connective tissue + vessels
subcutaneous fat
label the layers in the picture
what are the epidermal layers?
stratum basalis
stratum spinosum
stratum granulosum
stratum lucidum
stratum corneum
what is the stratum basalis?
stratum basalis - sits on top of dermis, contains stem cells capable of regenerating keratinocytes
what is the stratum spinosum?
stratum spinosum - above basalis, contains desmosomes which form spines to connect keratinocytes
what is stratum granulosum?
stratum granulosum - contain keratohyalin granules used to form keratin filaments, appear darker on pathology
what is stratum lucidum?
- clear layer of dead skin cells
what is stratum corneum?
- contains anucleated cells filled with keratin filaments, acts as tough layer
what is the dermis?
connective tissues + blood vessels
above s/c fat
what is hyyperkeratosis?
when can hyperkeratosis develop?
what is parakeratosis?
what is hypergranulosis?
what is it seen in?
what is spongiosis?
