epithelial cells Flashcards
what are epithelial cells?
where can you find them?
form epithelium which lines cavities/surfaces of the body eg skin, lung, GI tract
secrete substances
what is the basement membrane?
fibroid extracellular matrix of proteins
anchors epithelial cells to connective tissue
what are the layers of the BM?
basal lamina - ECM secreted by epithelial cells, contains laminin proteins, type 4 collagen
reticular lamina - reticular connective tissue anchoring basal lamina to connective tissue
where is type 4 collagen abnormal?
goodpastures
alport syndrome
what is cell polarity?
sheets of epithelial cells bind together
different functions for each side of the cell
what is the apical membrane?
side facing cavity/lumen
what is the basolateral membrane?
side away from the cavity/lumen
what are the types of epithelial cells junctions?
join plasma membranes of adjacent cells
tight junctions
adherens junctions
gap junctions
desmosomes
what are tight junctions?
what do they do?
where are they found?
what are the made of?
what are adherent junctions?
