Skills 1 Flashcards
When is a scatter graph used?
When data is available for many locations.
What is the advantage of a scatter graph?
Anomalies can easily be identified
What is the disadvantage od a scatter graph?
Best fit line can be inaccurate.
What are disadvantages of a bar graph?
- plotting too many bars makes it appear cluttered, less easy to interpret.
- If there’s a wide range of data, impact is lost as it’s difficult to read easily.
- Becomes more complicated if there are uneven class intervals.
What are advantages of a bar graph?
- shows proportions
- visually attractive
- simply to construct and read
What are the advantages of a pi chart?
- Shows proportion of components,
- Shows scale
What are the disadvantages of a pie chart?
less than 3 looks simplistic
if many segments are a similar size it is hard to interpret.
What is the function of proportional circles
-To show proportions across an area.
What are the advantages of proportional circles?
- Location shown
- Provides context
- Shows scale
- Shows proportions
- Visually attractive.
What are disadvantages of proportional circles?
- Hard to calculate
- Size may obscure location or mean less accurate positioning on maps.
What are choropleth maps?
They show data using colour.
What are advantages of choropleth maps?
- Visually effective to spot general patterns
- Location shown
- Provides context
- Shows scale
- Shows density
- Easy to construct.
What are the disadvantages of chorpleth maps?
- Map assumes whole area has the same value but there could be important variations,
- Abrupt changes in boundaries, but realistically they would merge.
What are the advantages of flow line maps?
- Straight forward visual impression.
- Can see sequences
- Scale/width of lines shows proportions.
What is a disadvantage of a flow line map?
In order to achieve a clear image, real distance and direction is distorted.
