Q

What are disadvantages of a bar graph?

A
  • plotting too many bars makes it appear cluttered, less easy to interpret.
  • If there’s a wide range of data, impact is lost as it’s difficult to read easily.
  • Becomes more complicated if there are uneven class intervals.

Q

What are the disadvantages of a pie chart?

A

less than 3 looks simplistic

if many segments are a similar size it is hard to interpret.

Q

What are disadvantages of proportional circles?

A
  • Hard to calculate

- Size may obscure location or mean less accurate positioning on maps.

Q

What are the disadvantages of chorpleth maps?

A
  • Map assumes whole area has the same value but there could be important variations,
  • Abrupt changes in boundaries, but realistically they would merge.

Q

What does an isoline map do?

A

Joins up places of equal value.

17
Q

What are advantages of isoline maps?

A
  • Spatial
  • represents equal values along their length
  • Colour can be added to show trends.
18
Q

What are disadvantages of isoline maps?

A
  • Allow flexible interpretation of data.

- May be errors in plotting.

19
Q

What are advantages of dot maps?

A
  • Spatial, show density and distribution

- Accurate - can use a scale, easy to plot.

20
Q

What are disadvantages of dot maps?

A
  • Clusters of dots merge making it impossible to interpret.

- Need one size of dot consistency

21
Q

What are advantages of triangular graphs?

A
  • useful if 3 components are to be compared
  • varying positions can be seen indicating relative importance of each
  • after plotting, clusters emerge enabling trends to be identified.
22
Q

What are the disadvantages of triangular graphs?

A
  • Hard to interpret
  • Limited range of data
  • % plus 3 variables.
23
Q

What are the advantages of a kite diagram?

A

Useful for displaying changes over distances.

-Width of kite enables visual comparison.

24
Q

What are disadvantages of kite diagrams?

A
  • Hard to plot

- Not useful with limited data

25
Q

What is a radial diagram used for?

A

To show direction over distance

26
Q

What is an advantage of a radial diagram?

A
  • Easy to see patterns
  • Spatial
  • Useful to show changes over time.
27
Q

What are disadvantages of a radial diagram?

A
  • Hard to plot

- Not useful with limited data.

28
Q

What is a log scale graph used for?

A
  • Comparison of a city

- Size within a country

29
Q

What are advantages of a log scale graph?

A
  • Good for data with a large range of values

- Useful for showing rate of change, steeper line suggests a faster rate of change.

30
Q

What are disadvantages of a log scale graph?

A
  • Easy to make plotting errors
  • Zero cannot be plotted
  • Negative and positive values cant be displayed on the same graph.
31
Q

How do you do a spearman rank?

A

1) set a null hypotheses
2) a test must be undertaken to support or reject this hypothesis
3) Rank first set of data (highest is ranked 1)
4) rank second set of data
5) work out the differences between the ranks
6) square all the differences
7) add all the d squared up
8) apply formula

32
Q

What does the worked out spearman rank tell you?

A

The number will be between -1 and 1, closer to 1 means a more positive correlation, closer to -1 means a stronger negative correlation.
