Skill-Related Flashcards
What is reaction time?
The time in between a signal being detected and the first movement to this signal
What are the factors which affect reaction time?
Distractions, number of responses and optimal concentration/arousal
How does concentration and arousal affect reaction time?
Concentration and arousal leads to quicker and appropriate reactions
How do distractions affect reaction time?
They add to reaction time and slow down responses
How does number of responses affect reaction time?
Reaction time is quickest when there is only one possible response
What is muscular power?
The ability to exert a maximal contraction in one explosive effort
What are the factors which affect muscular power?
Age, gender, fibre type and fibre recruitment
How does age affect muscular power?
It peaks around 25 years of age, and then declines by 1% per year
How does gender affect muscular power?
Males have greater muscle mass than females, therefore greater muscular power
How does fibre type affect muscular power?
Fast twitch fibres can generate muscular power quicker than slow twitch fibres
What is anaerobic capacity?
The ability to produce energy without using oxygen
What are the factors which affect anaerobic capacity?
Age, gender, fibre type and anaerobic training
How does age affect anaerobic capacity?
Anaerobic power tends to peak around 30 years of age and declines by 1% per year
How does gender affect anaerobic capacity?
Males have a greater muscle mass than females, so will have greater stores of anaerobic fuels
How does anaerobic training affect anaerobic capacity?
It greatly improves the muscle’s ability to tolerate the build-up of lactic acid, hydrogen ions and ADP
