open - sporting environment changes while skill is being performed, the performer must react and adjust to the situation

closed - sporting environment/playing conditions are stable, actions can be exactly repeated, few decisions to be made

A

gross - large muscle groups used to perform skill, big movements created
shoulder muscles in rugby tackle

fine - small muscles are used to perform a skill that requires precision, intricate, accurate movements

A

self paced - performer has complete control and will choose when to start, they have control over timing, speed and rate of execution
hammer throw

externally paced - performer has no control over the speed or timing of the skill

what are discrete, continuous and serial skills and examples

A

discrete - clear beginning and ending
tennis serve

continuous - no clear beginning or end, the end subroutine of one skill becomes the beginning subroutine of the next
cycling, running, swimming

serial - a skill that contains several discrete skills in order to make an integrated movement
hop, step, jump
gymnastics routine

high - skill that is not easily broken into, difficult to break into subroutines, whole practice recommended
sprint start

low - easily broken into parts, sunroutines can be practiced in isolation
