multi-store memory Flashcards
what does the memory system do
stores and retrieves information, makes comparisons with previous movement experiences and selects which motor programme to retrieve and produce movement
what are the three parts of the memory store
- short term sensory store
- short term memory (STM)
- long term memory (LTM)
what does the short term sensory store do
recieves all of the information from the display
selective attention occurs, to prevent information overload
information is filtered / selective attention
passes the revelant information to the short term memory
holds information for a very brief amount of time (a few seconds) after the original stimulus has stopped
what does the short term memory do
referred to as the working memory system
recieves information from the short term sensory store
DCR process occurs
information in to / from the LTM (encoding - linking to LTM)
limited capacity - can only hold 6-9 items
limited time scale - 30 seconds
what does the long term memory do
stores past experiences as motor programmes
mental image of movement to be performed
all relevant rehearsed information
used for comparison in the STM
information to and from the STM
unlimited capacity
what is encoding
putting things into your long term memory
what is retrieval
comparison/recognition of motor programmes from the LTM
what strategiescan be used to ensure effective storage in the LTM
mental rehersal/imagery - going over / visualising the skill enables learners to remember
linking/assosiation with past experiences - relate new information to already stored information
chinking - breaking the skilled action into subroutines
enjoyment / fun - positive experiences or information presented in a new or distinctive way makes it more memorable
chaining - learning one subroutine and then linking on another
reinforcement/rewards - positive feedback is more likely to help memory
practice / skill - over learning or grooving skills helps to create a motor programme
meaningful - information is more likely to be remembered if the learner understands its relelvance to their performance
