Skeleton And Muscular System Flashcards
How many bones in the body ?
An adult has 206 but a child has way more
Cartilage
It acts as a shock absorber, it allows limited movement and it stops bones rubbing of each other
Joint
A place where two bones meet
Fused joint
Do not allow bones to move e.g. Skull
Synovial joints
Allow bones to move (ball and socket joint + hinge joint)
Ball and socket joint
Allows movement in several directions e.g. Hip and shoulder
Hinge joint
Allows movement in one place only e.g. Knee, elbow, jaw and knuckles
Synovial fluid
It acts as a shock absorber allowing bones to move and prevent friction
Ligaments
Tough, elastic fibres hold the bones together
Tendons
Are anchor muscles to bone
Antagonistic pairs
The biceps contracts to pull up the arm. The triceps contracts to pull the arm down
Functions of the skeleton
To support the body, to allow movement and to protect delicate organs
