Skeleton And Muscular System Flashcards
How many bones in the body
Adult = 206 Children = way more
Cartiliage
Acts as a shock absorber . Allow limeted Movement. Stops bones rubbing off eachother
Joint
Joints are places where two bones join together
Fused joint
Do not allow bones to move . Appear as if they are stitched together e.g skull
Synovial joints
Allow bones to move
Two different types of synovial joints
- ball and socket joint
- hinge joint
Ball and socket joint
Allows movement in several directions e.g hip and shoulder
Hinge joint
Allows movement in one plane only - knee , elbow , jaw , knuckles
Synovial joint
It contains a lubricating fluid called synovial fluid
Synovial fluid acts as a shock absorber - allowing bones to move and prevent friction
Ligaments
Tough , elastic fibres hold the bones together
Tendons
Anchor muscle to bone
When the muscle contracts the joint and tendons bend and the bone moves
Antagonistic pairs
Muscles can only contract (gets shorter ) they can only pull bones .
The biceps contracts to pull up the lower arm . The triceps contracts to pull the arm down -> antagonistic pair if muscles
Functions of the skeleton
To support the body
To allow movement
To protect delicate organs
