skeleton and bones Flashcards
Bones and Organs:
Made of tissues: Fibrous, CT
Bone tissue:
made of many cells
Bone cells:
Osteoblast, Osteocyte, and Osteoclast
Osteoblast: (B)
-Bone building cells
-New bone formation
-Found in the periosteum + endosteum
Osteocyte: (M)
-Mature osteoblasts
-Maintain bone tissue
-Transport the nutrients and waste
Osteoclast: (R)
-Digest bone matrix: resorption
-large cells from a fusion of white blood cells
Extracellular Matrix:
Secreted by osteoblasts
Organic:
-Collagen protein
-resilience: without it, would break
Inorganic:
Salts: calcium phosphate
-65% of mass
-Makes bones hard
-hydroxyapatite
Long Bone:
-Longer than wide
-ex: femur, tibula, radius, etc
Short bone:
-Width and length are the same
-ex:carpools, tarsals, wrist
Flat Bone:
-Thin, plate like
-ex: ribs, skull bones, shoulder blade
Irregular Bone:
-irreg/ wide variety
-ex: vertebrae
Sesamoid Bone:
-round and flat
-ex: knee cap/ patella
