Functions of the skeleton
- support and shape
- movement
- protection
Support and shape
The bones of the skeleton keep the body upright and give it shape
Movement
Bones move when muscles contract to pull on a bone
Protection
The skeleton protects organs, for example: the skull, protects the brain
Joints
Joints -> where bones meet
1: fused joint
2: freely moving joint
Fused joint
No movement between bones. For example: skull
Freely moving joints
Ball and socket joints. For example: hips.
Hinge joints. For example: knee
Synovial fluid
A liquid that oils the joints and allows it to move freely
Cartilage
Protects the end of the bone and reduces friction in the joint
Muscles
Muscles allow bone movement
They are made of protein
They contract (tighten) and relax to move parts of the body.
Tendons
Join muscle to bone
Ligaments
Join bone to bone
Antagonistic Pair
Two muscles which carry out opposite effects
