Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration
Controlled release of energy from food
What are the two types of respiration
Aerobic - requires oxygen
Anaerobic- doesn’t require oxygen
Release of energy
1) breathing - air in carbon dioxide out
2) respiration energy released from food
Aerobic respiration
Glucose (from food) and oxygen (from air) in
Energy, carbon dioxide and water vapour out
Test for CO2
Limewater
Turns from clear to milky
Air
Nitrogen
Oxygen
Carbon dioxide
Other gases
Lungs
Pleura Bronchioles Trachea Bronchus Ribs Alveoli Diaphragm
Pleura
Keeps lung lubricated to aid movement
Bronchioles
Carries air to and from alveoli
Trachea
Carries air between windpipe and lungs
Ribs
Protects heart and lungs
Alveoli
Gas exchange
Diaphragm
It’s contacting and relaxing allows lungs to inflate and deflate
Breathing
1) diaphragm contracts pulling rib cage down
2) air is taken in nasal passage or mouth
3) diaphragm relaxes pushing rib cage up, air will escape
Gas exchange- inhaling
Oxygen removed from air in alveoli and passed to the bloodstream via capillaries
