Acids & Bases Flashcards
What are both acids and bases?
Corrosive
What are alkalis?
Bases that dissolve in water
Examples of everyday acids
Lemon juice, orange juice, vinegar, apples, sour milk, fizzy drinks and tea
Example of everyday neutral
Water
Examples of everyday bases
Toothpaste, limewater, bread soda, window cleaner, caustic soda
Lab acid
Hydrochloric acid
Lab bases
Sodium hydroxide
What is an indicator
A compound which shows by colour a
Change if something is acidic or basic
Example of an indicator
Litmus paper
Colours on the indicator to tell if something is acidic basic or neutral
On litmus paper after testing
Blue = Base
Red = Acid
No change = Neutral
What does universal indicator do
Will tell if a substance is acid/base/neutral and its PH strength
What does the PH scale do
The PH scale tells us how acidic or basic a solution is.
It allows us to quantify (put a number on) a solution
Numbers on a PH scale
Grater than 7: alkaline
Less than 7: acidic
7: neutral
How can the ph solution be found
A ph meter
Universal indicator solution
