Skeletal: Types of movement at synovial joints Flashcards
Flexion
Reducing the angle at a joint
Dorsiflexion
bringing toes towards the shin
Extension
Increasing the angle at a joint
Lateral flexion
The movement of bending sideways, from the
waist
Plantarflexion
pointing toes away
Horizontal flexion
with a straight arm or
leg; moving that limb in front of your body
Horizontal extension
moving the limb
away from the front of the body
Hyperextension
Movement beyond the normal anatomical position, in the opposite direction
to flexion. Can occur at the vertebrae (slightly moveable), shoulder and hip
(synovial).
Abduction
movement of a limb away from the midline
Adduction
movement of a limb towards the midline
Horizontal abduction
bringing a limb across your body (flexion)
Horizontal adduction
movement away from your body (extension)
Circumduction
A circular movement that results in a conical action.
Rotation
Circular movement of a limb.
This also happens at the neck due to the
pivot joint.
