Protection
skeleton protects vital organs
Mineral Storage and acid-base homeostasis
bones stores minerals such as Ca^2+ and PO4^3-, which are necessary for electrolyte and acid base balance
Blood Cell formation
red bone marrow is the site of blood cell formation
Fat Storage
yellow bone marrow stores triglycerides
Movement
muscles produce body movement via their attachment to bones
Support
the skeleton supports the weight of the body
Long Bone
bone that is longer than it is wide (ex. humerus, ulna, radius, femur, fibula, tibia, phalanges, metacarpals, and metatarsals)
Short Bone
bone that is as long as it is wide (ex. carpal and tarsal)
Flat Bone
bone is broad, flat, and thin (ex. ribs, sternum, and skull)
Irregular Bone
bones shape did not fit into other classes (ex. axis, coxal, atlas, sphenoid, and thoracic vertebral)
Sesamoid Bone
round, flat, and found with in tendon (ex. patella)
Axial Skeleton
skull, auditory ossicles, and hyoid bone, vertebral column, and thoracic cage
Number of bones in Axial Skeleton
80 total
29 skull and associated bones:
- cranium 8
- face 14
-auditory ossicles 6
-hyoid bone 1
25 Thoracic cage:
-sternum 1
-ribs 24
26 Vertebral Column
-vertebrae 24
- Sacrum 1, 5 fused together
- Coccyx 1, 4 fused together
Appendicular Skeleton
Pectoral and Pelvic girdles
upper and lower limbs
