Skeletal System- Classifications of joints Flashcards
Which 3 types of joint can be found in the human skeleton
Fixed
Slightly moveable
Synovial
Give an example of where you can find a fixed, slightly moveable and synovial joint?
Fixed - crainium
Slightly moveable - vertebrae
Synovial - shoulder, hip, elbow, knee, neck, wrist or ankle
Describe a fixed joint
They are fibrous or immovable. Fixed joints form when bones interlock during early childhood. The bone plates in your cranium, fixed together and protect your brain
Describe a slightly moveable joint
Also knowns as cartilaginous.
The ends of the bone are covered in a smooth covering called articular cartilage reducing friction.
Found between sections of the vertebrae
Describe a synovial joint
These are our freely movable joints and have high mobility.
They are vital for sporting movements and allow various ‘actions’ when 2 or more bones meet to form the joint.
They all have a distinctive structure
Within the synovial joint structure describe the function of a ligament and tendon
Ligament - attaches bone to bone
Tendon - Attach muscle to bone
Within the synovial joint structure describe the function of the synovial fluid
Provides the joint with lubrication
Within the synovial joint structure describe the function of the cartilage
Prevents friction or bones rubbing together
Within the synovial joint structure describe the function of the joint capsule
Tough fibrous tissue, encloses the joint and provides support
Within the synovial joint structure describe the function of the bursae
A sack of fluid, which reduces friction
